Summit Cosmetic Surgery

My name is Donna Babson and I want to share my story with you. In 1945 my family lived in a small apartment on the third floor of an apartment building in Washington State. There was frequently trouble with the wood-burning stove. One day, while my mother was in the shower, sparks from the back of the stovepipe ignited the wall of the apartment. When my mother discovered the fire, she was panic-stricken and ran upstairs to find me contently sucking on my baby bottle in my crib. But when she picked me up the skin fell from my body. After I spent months in the hospital with little to no improvement, my parents were told I probably would not live. I was severely burned, and my face and arms were permanently scarred.
At 62 years old I wondered if had to live with the physical and emotional scars forever. I scheduled a consultation with Dr. Edward Ricciardelli (plastic surgeon) at Summit Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Care Center in Supply. Dr. Ricciardelli trained and taught at several major university hospitals, including the University of Virginia, University of Iowa and University of Washington. He has been practicing in the Wilmington and Brunswick County area for 13 years.
Dr. Ricciardelli and his staff immediately made me comfortable in asking the questions that I had wondered about for years. He clearly explained my options for improving the scars that I had tried to hide all of my life. We decided that the best course of action for me would be a skin resurfacing laser called CO2 and eyelid surgery.
My surgery was scheduled at the Summit Surgical Suite in Wilmington. The staff was wonderful, and I was comforted by the faces that had become familiar to me. The surgery took about one and a half hours, and I was awake and able to return home by one o’clock.
As I look in the mirror today, I am so happy with the transformation my skin has made. Remarkably, it continues to improve and change. There is about an 80 percent improvement in my scarring, and with the removal of the excess skin on my upper lids my eyes look much less tired. I can actually wear mascara now without it smearing on my upper lids! My confidence level has returned, and I recently made a trip home for my mother to see my transformation.
I am so happy that I had the surgery with Dr. Ricciardelli. I wish that I hadn’t waited so long. Sometimes it takes the right people coming together to make it all happen.
